What this application does
Personal Backup is a local command-line backup workflow operated by the owner of this site. It uses restic to create encrypted, versioned snapshots of selected files on the operator's computer, andrclone to transfer the resulting encrypted backup repository to the operator's own Google Drive account.
The application is not a Google Drive file browser, a general file-sharing service, or an application offered to third-party users. The website does not perform backups or handle OAuth sign-in. Backup and authentication operations take place on the operator's local device.
Google Drive API integration
rclone accesses the Google Drive API using OAuth 2.0 with thehttps://www.googleapis.com/auth/drive.file scope. This scope allows the application to view and manage files and folders created by the application; it does not grant broad access to unrelated existing Drive files.
- Upload encrypted restic repository files and directories to Google Drive.
- List and retrieve those files when checking or restoring a backup.
- Update or remove application-created files when maintaining the backup repository.
The data sent to Google Drive consists of restic-encrypted repository objects. Google Drive can still observe storage metadata such as object sizes and update times. Original file contents are encrypted locally before upload.
Data flow
- Selected files remain under the operator's local control.
- restic encrypts and snapshots the data locally using a separate repository password.
- rclone authenticates to the operator's Google account and transfers encrypted backup objects.
- The operator may retrieve and decrypt those backups locally when restoration is required.
Privacy and policies
Details on Google user data access, use, storage, sharing, retention, and deletion are available in the application-specific policy documents:
Google API usage is also subject to theGoogle API Services User Data Policy.
